On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, Bergerac wakes to the rhythm of its market. Five minutes’ walk from the Repaire, under the 19th-century covered halls and all around the square, Périgord producers lay out their stalls: truffles in season, Beaulieu strawberries, local walnuts, foie gras and duck breast, goat’s cheeses from Les Tournières, chestnut honeys, and wines from the neighbouring appellations.
It’s the perfect excuse to put together an apéritif basket to share under the Repaire’s covered terrace — some pâté de tête, cornichons, a bottle of Pécharmant from the wine merchant, and you’re set.
On summer Saturdays, the market spills down to the banks of the Dordogne with an artisan section (pottery, soap-making, basketry). Live music is frequent in high season.
Tip: arrive before 10.30am for the best produce — or after 11.45am for end-of-market bargains.
