Eight kilometres south of Bergerac, perched on its hill, the Château de Monbazillac looks out over the Dordogne valley. Its Renaissance silhouette — four towers, filled-in moats, slate roofs — sets the tone for the whole region: wine has been made here since the Middle Ages, and hospitality comes with it.
The Monbazillac appellation is famous for its legendary sweet wine, made from grapes touched by noble rot (botrytis cinerea) and picked by hand in several successive passes. The result: a golden wine with aromas of honey, candied apricot and exotic fruit — to drink as an apéritif, with foie gras, or with dessert.
Not to be missed: the vaulted cellars (open year round), a tasting at the château’s wine bar, and the courtyard viewpoint with one of the finest views in the Bergerac area.
